*Call to Worship

We come into God’s presence with singing,

because some news is so good, it simply must be sung.

We come into God’s presence with scripture,

because that Word is what helps hold us up.

We come into God’s presence with one another,

because it is impossible to be Christian by ourselves.

We come into God’s presence with love,

because it is love that first brought us into being.

*Hymn #727 “Will You Let Me Be Your Servant”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Gracious God,

we have sought after things,

but we have not sought after you.

We have expected generosity,

but we have not shown generosity.

We have not been gracious or grateful.

We have failed to remember all that you have done.

Forgive us and fill our hearts with gratitude.

Help us to share our gifts

and strengthen our legs so that we can

run after you, O God.

In Jesus’ name we pray.

Time for silent reflection

Response “Trisagion” Ortega

Holy God. Holy and mighty.

Holy Immortal One, Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Time with the Children

Congregation: God go with you.

Children: God be with you here.

We Listen for the Word of God

Prayer for Illumination

Psalter Psalm 92

The Lord is clad in majesty,

Adorned in glorious array;

The throne which earth’s wide bounds ordained

Still wears the crown of God today.

The pillars of creation stand,

Unshaken in their ageless flight;

The raging floods their wrath dispel,

And meekly wane before God’s might.

Your testimonies, Lord are fast;

In holiness, Your house secure;

From age to age shall Your decrees

In righteousness and truth endure.

Faith-in-Action Stories

On Saturday September 23rd, groups of individuals from EBPC went into the community. They didn’t do anything heroic; they gave of their time and provided tangible expressions of caring as they planted, painted, sang, and stacked cans to feed hungry people. And while they did they reflected on passages from Scripture: Psalm 92; Acts 20:35; Philippians 4:6; I Peter 4:10. We use this time to hear their brief reflections.

Time of Reflection

Prayers of the People (with the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Prayer of Thanksgiving & Dedication

We Go from Here to Serve

*Hymn #69 “Here I Am, Lord”

*Parting Words

As people of faith we have gathered for worship.

As people of faith we now return to the world.

Go out to share the story of faith,

the story of life, with the world around you.

We share the faith in word and in deed,

in speech and in action.

As you go out to give a living witness,

as you go out to testify to God's love active in the world,

go knowing that God goes with you,

sharing the laughter and the hope, the fears and the tears.

Thanks be to God!

*Please stand if you are able.

About Today’s Service & Activities

Participants in Today’s Service: Pastor: John Hilley; Music Director: Nate Strasser; Musicians: the Choir, Praise Band; Liturgist: Ralph Comer.

This week in Children's Worship: This week we will hear a new parable called the Parable of the Vineyard Workers. We will learn about how generous God is to all of us - even to those others may judge as less worthy. Come play with us as we discover new ways we model God's love by being generous with others.

This week in Upwards: Upwards will remain in worship this week to hear about Faith-in-Action Saturday.

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the calendar of events for dates and times. Be sure to complete a yellow contact card if you wish to receive future communications from EBPC.

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Join us Tuesday morning at 9:30 for a Bible Study! You are invited to study how the early followers of Jesus lived in a way that showed their belief in Jesus as Lord. This series is called "Living Unafraid in a Frightening World." Pastor John will lead a group of EBPC church members, friends and preschool parents each Tuesday morning for an hour to study the Book of Acts. The group will examine the messages of the life of the early Church and how it relates to the issues people face today. This week the focus is upon the story we know as Pentecost (Acts 2:1-13). The Bible Study will run every Tuesday from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

With the natural disasters that have been happening in the United States, Mexico, and around the globe, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has been very busy with on-the-ground help and they have some great ideas about what you can do to help. Visit their website at http://pda.pcusa.org/ and learn more about their ideas to GIVE, ACT, & PRAY. PDA’s emergency response and specialization in long-term recovery is fueled by your generous gifts. You can also give with a credit card by visiting presbyterianmission.org/GIVE-Irma or by calling 800-872-3283. PDA is still in need of support for mucking out and rebuilding efforts in the Gulf region after Harvey. Thank you to those of you who have already directed gifts to (DR000169-Harvey, DR000194-Irma, and for the Mexico City earthquake use DR000014).

September winds blow in another month when we make the much-needed trip to the College Grove Food Pantry, and we need your help! Basic items needed are: canned tuna, chicken, other meat products, canned soups, vegetables, fruits, peanut butter, jellies packaged dessert mixes, paper products such as toilet tissue, paper towels, facial tissues, bath soap, and household cleaning products. Other items you wish to donate are always acceptable and appreciated, including pet food. The collection bins will be in the gathering place beginning this Sunday until September 27 so you can give all month! We will be delivering all of our church’s donated items on Sat, Sept. 30. If you are interested in being a part of the group which goes to College Grove to deliver our contributions and participate in the distribution of the food baskets on that day, please let Martha Wolfe or Mary Ellen Hofstetter know.
