   Thought before Worship

What kind of thanks would we afford? God, make of us your living tithes; the first fruits, fit to work for you . . . . transformed and cleansed, restored, made new.—John Thornburg

We Gather to Worship God

Welcome & Announcements

Stewardship 2018 “Connecting the Blocks” Bill & Martha Wolfe

A Call to Worship Based on Psalm 98

Come, sing a new song to God!
Remember all the times full of wonder
God has already saved us!

Dust off the piano; tune up the guitar;
try out the drums!
Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth!
Open the windows!

Listen to the choirs outdoors,
feathered and furred!
Let the hills sing together for joy!
For God is not done doing wonders!
God is coming to set everything right.
Sing a new song to God!

Opening Prayer

*Hymn #591 “Halle, Halle, Hallelujah!”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

God of unending love,

Forgive us our lack of imagination.

We struggle to reconcile the world’s brokenness and your goodness.

In our confusion, we either focus on you, and pretend nothing is wrong,

or we focus on everything that is wrong,

and turn our backs on you.

We cling tightly to our sense of order and understanding,

afraid there is not enough grace to go around.

Give us the confidence we need to trust in your complexity.

Time for silent reflection

Response “Trisagion” Ortega

Holy God. Holy and mighty.

Holy Immortal One, Have mercy, have mercy on us.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Prayer for Illumination

The Word of the Lord.

Sermon “Invited to the Celebration” John R. Hilley

Time of Reflection

Prayers of the People—Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as

we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

*Doxology #606

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

praise God, all creatures here below;

praise God above, ye heavenly host;

praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Litany of Faith & Dedication

We are EBPC.

We believe in a loving God, who created us and is re-creating us every day. We trust in Jesus, who carries us and comforts us, who seeks us and saves us.

We listen for the Spirit, who inspires us, provokes us, and leads us.

We believe the power of the gospel can change lives.

It can heal hearts and bind up the broken.

It can inspire change and tear down walls.

We believe we are all part of that story.

We believe in the power of music, that it can open hearts and make the gospel soar.

It sings deep truth to a world in desperate need of beauty, and it gathers us together when we are falling apart.

We believe that worship is for everyone,

and that everyone, from toddlers and teenagers to those who say “fiddle” and those who say “violin,” have an important place in our community of faith.

We believe in holy hospitality.

We believe that space for relationships to evolve and grow is essential. We expect that by welcoming strangers, we will find ourselves entertaining angels.

We believe that children have much to teach us,

and that we have a responsibility to teach, love, and nurture them. We are committed to helping them make their way in this world.

We believe that when Jesus said,

“Love your neighbor as yourself,” he really meant it.

We believe we are called to reach out in our community with God’s own love, and bring God’s promised new day a little bit closer.

We are EBPC.

We believe that grace will hold this church, the entire Church, together. We believe the Spirit is stirring, that God is doing a new thing. We believe that God is always among us, in our past, now and tomorrow and forevermore.

We are stewards.

We return to God portions of what God has given us: our time, the fruits of our labors, our commitment. May the gifts we bring show that God’s rule is at hand— both now and to come.

We Go from Here and Serve

*Hymn #69 “Here I Am, Lord”

*Parting Words & Benediction

*Please stand if you are able.

Immediately following today’s service, we will gather to replace the contents of the time capsule and break ground for a new church sign.

About Today’s Service & Activities

Participants in Today’s Service: Pastor: John Hilley; Music Director: Nate Strasser; Musicians: the Praise Band, Choir; Liturgist: Ralph Comer.

This Week in Children's Worship: Come join us for the telling of the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids. We will learn about how important it is to always be ready for Jesus. Together we will make oil lamps to remind us to always shine our light for Jesus and think of ways we can "be ready" by filling our hearts with love, joy, and kindness just like the bridesmaids filled their lamps with oil! We will also shine our light by decorating Grab n Go Breakfast Bags for our friends at Glenview Elementary!

This Week in Upwards: Come join us as we explore how our own personal stories fit into Jesus' bigger story of love, generosity, and faith! We will hear the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids and reflect on ways we can prepare our hearts and minds for Jesus. We will also create "All About Me" posters that can help us explore our own faith journeys as we seek to see our own story within God's big story of love!

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the calendar of events for dates and times. Be sure to complete a yellow contact card if you wish to receive future communications from EBPC.

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Collection bins are in the Gathering Place for these items. We have a short collection time, as all turkeys are due at the church between 3p and 6p. on Thursday, November 16th. We have created a shopping list of all the items needed by College Grove for the Thanksgiving dinner collection. Please grab the list at church or print it from the eblast. A sign-up sheet for those who wish to contribute turkeys is also in the Gathering Place.
