We Gather to Worship God

    Welcome & Announcements

Prelude          “Spirit of the Living God”

Reading of the Day   Acts 2:1-13   The Story of Pentecost

 *Call to Worship

The God of the whirlwind and fire sweeps into our presence in this hour.

Glory be to God, who strengthens us, and blesses all people with peace.
God, who called all the world into being, calls forth new life in us today.
Glory be to God, in whose creative purpose we are claimed and empowered.
God, whose Spirit unites all people in a common language of love, confirms God's gifts in us as we gather here.
Glory be to God, who created light in which we can walk in confident expectation.

*Hymn #307 “God of Grace and God of Glory”

 Call to Confession

 Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, you poured out your Spirit upon gathered disciples, creating bold voices and clear understanding, and a new community of faith. We confess that we are not always receptive to that Spirit. We are deaf to your word of grace and truth and we refuse to live as a people made one in Christ. We confess that we prefer the status quo to the new life you promise. Forgive our timidity and fill us again with the fire of your Spirit that we may live as your faithful people, doing your will in all things, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Time for Silent Reflection

Response “Spirit of Living God” Hymn #288

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Leader: Friends, believe the good news.

All: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

*Passing of the Peace

As God through Jesus has recognized and forgiven each of us, let us now ourselves recognize and forgive each other by sharing God’s peace with one another. The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Jackson Enfinger, Son of Stephen & Emily Enfinger

Do you, as members of the church of Jesus Christ, promise to guide and nurture Jackson by word and deed, with love and prayer?

We do.

Profession of Faith

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried.

He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into Heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

Prayers of the People—Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Children’s Worship: Children’s worship helps children ages 3 through 2nd grade explore Bible units through hands on, age appropriate, experiential activities that are designed to engage them while also instilling faith formation. We meet upstairs every Sunday following the Time with Children. If this is your child’s first visit, please let us know if there are any food allergies as a snack is served. Theme for the Day: This week the children conclude their two-part exploration of the story of Lydia and baptism in the early days of the church as part of the “Women in the Bible” series. Next week: A multi-part series on the life of Moses unfolds with a baby, a basket and the beginning of a life of adventure for our Israelite hero. Each week leading up to VBS, a new chapter of the story will be explored.

Flowers & Fellowship Food Sign-up: Please consider signing up for flowers, fellowship food, or both in the coming months. New sign-up sheets are in the narthex. If you have any questions please contact Regina Montgomery at regina.montgomery@vanderbilt.edu.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Middle School Youth: Jeffrey Rein’s Lake House Overnight on Friday-Saturday, June 5th and 6th. PYG and 608 will continue with service projects and fellowship throughout the summer. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly McConnell, Youth Director, at ebpcyouth@comcast.net.

A weekly prayer group meets at 9:00 am on Wednesday mornings in an upstairs classroom at the church. All are welcome to join us.

The month of May is again our month to supply food for the College Grove Food Pantry, which serves the southeast Corner of Williamson County and one city in nearby northern Marshall County. We will have the food bins lining the wall out in the Gathering Place beginning this coming Sunday, April 26 and will collect through Wednesday, May 27. All staple foods are appreciated and special requests are always made for canned meat products, canned fruits, soups, cereals and household cleaning agents. Our youth have agreed to be responsible for the distribution of these on May 30.

Young Families Save the Date: Please mark your calendars for June 3rd from 5:30 – 7:00 pm for our monthly dinner and get-together. If you have any questions, please contact Elizabeth Johnson at eh_johnson22@hotmail.com.

Wilderness Escape Vacation Bible School: Grab a pair of sandals, your bathrobe, your sense of adventure, and get ready to escape with the Israelites! At Wilderness Escape, we’ll meet Moses, hang out with the Israelites, and join the amazing adventure of trusting God in the wilderness! July 8-10 9:00 am to noon. There will also be a program on July 12 during worship service. Registration forms are available in the narthex and on the church’s website. There are plenty of opportunities to offer volunteer support before and during the program. For more info, contact Gail Brewer at gakb1973@gmail.com.

Music Strategy Team Update: At its April meeting, the Session approved a joint recommendation from the Worship and Personnel Committees that a Special Committee be selected by and accountable to the Session with the following deliverables:

· Outline a music strategy for EBPC that will engage the entire congregation in many aspects of the church, attracting families and individuals of all ages.

· Create a staffing strategy with associated job descriptions to achieve the strategy.

· Recruit and hire the approved staff.

The team has met and is currently working on the long term music strategy and search requested by Session. In the meantime, a candidate for the role of Music Director has, quite literally, fallen into our lap. His name is Nathan Strasser. Next Sunday, May 31st, he will be working with our choir and summer praise band in providing the music during worship as part of his candidacy for Interim Music Director while the Music Strategy Team continues its work. Nate is comfortable working in multiple genres, among them Christian contemporary, classical and jazz. He is certified by the American Guild of Organists and excels in piano, organ, and cello. We hope you will join us next Sunday!

We would like to thank everyone that helped us out in our time of need while Jackson was in the NICU. It was really appreciated and all the calls, texts, in person visits, meals and gifts meant the world to us and we are really thankful to have a wonderful church family that helps us and others in a time of need. We look forward to raising Jackson with you all in this wonderful church! -Emily, Stephen and Jackson Enfinger
