*A Call to Worship

Leader: God’s Spirit is poured out onto us:

Congregation: The youth are prophesying and seeing visions; the old are dreaming new dreams.

L: God’s Spirit is poured out onto us:

C: The Spirit of God continues to teach us to love one another.

L: God’s Spirit is poured out onto us:

C: We have a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit binds us together as one.

L: Come, let us celebrate the Holy Spirit among us:

All: Come, let us worship God in Spirit and in Truth.

*Opening Prayer

*Hymn #826 “Lift High the Cross”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Almighty God, you poured out your Spirit upon gathered disciples, creating bold voices and clear understanding, and a new community of faith. We confess that we are not always receptive to that Spirit. We are deaf to your word of grace and truth and we refuse to live as a people made one in Christ. We confess that we prefer the status quo to the new life you promise. Forgive our timidity and fill us again with the fire of your Spirit that we may live as your faithful people, doing your will in all things, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Time for silent reflection

Response “Spirit of the Living God” Hymn #288

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

As God through Jesus has recognized and forgiven each of us, let us now ourselves recognize and forgive each other by sharing God’s peace with one another. The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Time with the Children

Congregation: God go with you.

Children: God be with you here.

Sermon “Three Words” John R. Hilley

Time of Reflection

Prayers of the People

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

We Respond to God’s Love

*Affirmation of Faith—Iona Creed

We believe that God is present

in the darkness before dawn;

in the waiting and uncertainty

where fear and courage join hands,

conflict and caring link arms,

and the sun rises over barbed wire.

We believe in a with-us God

who sits down in our midst

to share our humanity.

We affirm a faith

that takes us beyond a safe place:

into action, into vulnerability

and onto the streets.

We commit ourselves to work for change

and put ourselves on the line;

to bear responsibility, take risks,

live powerfully

and face humiliation;

to stand with those on the edge;

to choose life and be used by the Spirit

for God’s new community of hope.

About Today’s Service & Activities

Participants In Today’s Service: Pastor: John Hilley; Music Director/Pianist: Nate Strasser; Musicians: the choir.

To Our Members and Guests: please sign our friendship pad.

For those of you with young children, please check out the shelf of children's Bibles located on the shelves in the Sanctuary. There are several different age-appropriate versions available for their use during the service. Please re-shelve them before you leave the building.

Children’s Worship: children’s worship helps children ages 3 through 2nd grade explore Bible units through hands-on, age appropriate, experiential activities that are designed to engage them while also instilling faith formation. We meet upstairs every Sunday following the Time with Children. Today’s story is “The Spirit Unleashed” - Acts 2:1-13 (Help children explore and celebrate the life-giving movement of the Holy Spirit in the world.) Next week’s story is “The Promise is for You and Your Children” - Acts 2:14a, 22-32 (Help children continue to celebrate Easter as they follow Peter's lead in telling the story of Jesus.)

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the Calendar of Events for dates and times. Interested in joining East Brentwood? Speak to John Hilley or Dave Ford.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

We hope you will join us on May 22 for our Springapalooza festival! Worship will begin at 10 a.m. and the picnic and festival will follow at 11 a.m. We will have a bounce house, water slide, field games, kiddie pools and fabulous music by EBPC preschoolers, EBPC Youth Band and our awesome EBPC music team. EBPC will provide hamburgers, veggie burgers and hot dogs. We are asking all church members and preschool families to bring their favorite side dish, a picnic blanket or lawn chair and your appetite for fun! There is a sign up sheet in the Gathering Place - please sign up for a dish. This event is hosted by all the groups that use our EBPC space as one community including: EBPC Church and Preschool, Tamil Language Group, ECO: English Conversation Group, and the Boy Scouts of America Troop 86.

Reminder: If you have your lanterns completed, please return them to the conference room table adjacent to the Gathering Place this Sunday or bring them the morning of 5/22.
