*Call to Worship

God’s Spirit is poured out onto us:

The youth are prophesying and seeing visions; the old are dreaming new dreams.

God’s Spirit is poured out onto us:

The Spirit of God continues to teach us to love one another.

God’s Spirit is poured out onto us:

We have a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit binds us together as one.

Come, let us celebrate the Holy Spirit among us:

Come, let us worship God in Spirit and in Truth.

*Opening Prayer

*Hymn #279 “Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God,

We gather here knowing our week is full of big and small challenges.

As we have dealt with those challenges, we have failed to live according to your Spirit.

We desire to live as Christ lived, but fall short.

We are not perfect.

We make mistakes.

We are not always loving.

We struggle with our unbelief.

We seek to honor you, and we look to you when we fall.

Help guide us, Lord, to be the people you want us to be.

Help us to be kind, forgiving, and gracious.

Time for silent reflection

Response “Spirit of the Living God”

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, Fall afresh on me.

Melt me; mold me; fill me; use me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

As God through Jesus has recognized and forgiven each of us, let us now ourselves recognize and forgive each other by sharing God’s peace with one another. The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Time with the Children

Congregation: God go with you.

Meditation An Invitation to Wonder Series: John R. Hilley

“Where is the Holy Spirit taking us and into whose lives?”

Time of Reflection

We Respond to God’s Love

*Hymn #286 “Breathe on Me, Breathe of God”

*Doxology #606

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

praise God, all creatures here below;

praise God above, ye heavenly host;

praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Holy Communion

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

Prayer of Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

...With those who continue to live in fear
with those who share the Spirit with others,
we will sing your praise forever and ever:

Holy, holy, holy are you, Shattering Spirit.
All creation will sing until it has no more breath.
Hosanna in the highest!

Blessed is the One who stands in our midst speaking peace.
Hosanna in the highest!

...As we would open our hearts to the Spirit,
as we would welcome the peace and power,
we tell of that faith grounded in Pentecost’s mystery:

Drawing his last breath, Christ died for us;
with the sudden breath of the resurrection,
Christ was raised;
Christ will return, to breathe the Spirit into us forever.

Sharing of the Bread and Cup

Communion Music

Prayer After Communion (with the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

We Go from Here to Serve

*Hymn #291 “Spirit, Spirit of Gentleness”

*Please stand if you are able.

To Our Members and Guests: please sign our friendship pad.

For those of you with young children, please check out the shelf of children's Bibles located on the shelves in the sanctuary. There are several different age-appropriate versions available for their use during the service. Please re-shelve them before you leave the building.

This morning, communion is served by intinction. The congregation will come forward to receive the bread, which they will then dip into the chalice of grape juice. Worshippers will return to their pews by the side aisles. The invitation to the Lord’s Supper is not just for Presbyterians or “members of the church.” All who confess Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord are invited to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Even one who doubts or whose trust is wavering may receive the bread and grape juice (in place of wine) in order to be assured of God’s love and grace in Jesus Christ.

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the calendar of events for dates and times.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Are you looking for a convenient way to support EBPC's mission and programs? Do you want a secure and organized way to make donations to the church? Are you like most people who do not carry a checkbook around anymore? EBPC offers many choices when it comes to donations. With the advent of online giving, making donations is an easy and convenient choice. Online giving gives you the ability to donate to EBPC without writing a check or remembering to give each month. EBPC offers two online giving options. One option gives you the ability to donate by bank draft directly from your bank and the second option allows you to donate online through our EBPC website, through a mobile app, or even with a quick text message from your phone.

Get your ice cream cranks and taste buds ready for Miss Martha's Ice Cream Crankin! Join our EBPC team on June 11 as we compete with other churches, organizations and groups for multiple prizes during the Miss Martha Crankin' event that benefits the Martha O'Bryan Center. Let's have several teams this year! We hope you will join us for the fun and tasty event!

Next Wednesday at 6 p.m., our EBPC youth and parents will meet at the church to review and prepare for this summer's Mission trip to Louisville scheduled for Sunday, June 11-June 16th. During that week, 13 youth will embark on a life-changing adventure as they aim to learn more about what the ‘Good Life’ (YOUTHWORKS theme for the week) means in terms of their relationship with God. They will achieve an awareness and understanding of this concept as they interact with people in soup kitchens, clothing distribution centers, children's recreational centers and elderly care facilities. Hats off to the adults; Paul Rein, Matthias Beatty, and Kelly McConnell, who will be guiding the youth through this amazing week!

Plans are shaping up for our 3rd Annual Music in the Grove concert on September 4th! We have three bands booked so far: Next Door Boys - which includes two alums from our very own preschool - and Mr. Steve, the Music Man and our very own Nate Strasser & Friends band. We are still confirming our headliner for the concert so stay tuned for an upcoming announcement. In addition to our musical offerings, we will have a bounce house, face painting, Skye Studios musical petting zoo, food trucks and more! Plus, we are encouraging bike riders and hammocks for this family fun event! More details to come!

Children's Announcements: Laura Coulam is teaching Children's Worship this week. The topic is coming of the Holy Spirit for Pentecost Sunday. Verses are Acts 2:1-4 and 36-41. There is no Upwards this week. Picnic and playdate on Tuesday, June 13 at 10 a.m. at River Park (next to Brentwood Library on Concord Rd).
