   Thought before Worship

Like a bull chasing the matador

is the man left to his own schemes

Everybody needs someone

beside em’ shining like a lighthouse from the sea.

We Gather to Worship God

Welcome & Announcements

Prelude How Deep the Father’s Love for Us Townend

© 1995 Thankyou Music (Admin. by Capitol CMG Publishing)

*A Call to Worship

By gathering together in worship, we declare:

We have some measure of faith,

and we would like to have more.

What happens here in this space,

matters out there in the world.

Our lives are not in vain,

and today is not yesterday lived over again.

God’s love is real,

and is always moving us toward grace.

With confidence and joy, with courage and hope,

let us worship God!

Opening Prayer

*Hymn #8 “Eternal Father, Strong to Save”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Merciful and gracious God,

we walk in a way that is not good.

We follow our own devices.

We ignore your image in ourselves and in our neighbors.

Do not turn away from us, O God,

but hear our cry for blessing.

Lead us out of the tombs we inhabit.

Guide us into your light

so that we may walk in your way. Amen.

Time for Silent Reflection

Response Hymn #654, “In the Lord I’ll Be Ever Thankful”

In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful; in the Lord I will rejoice!

Look to God; do not be afraid.

Lift up your voices; the Lord is near.

Lift up your voices; the Lord is near.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

As God through Jesus has recognized and forgiven each of us, let us now ourselves recognize and forgive each other by sharing God’s peace with one another. The Peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Time with the Children

Congregation: God go with you.

Children: God be with you here.

We Listen for the Word of God

Prayer for Illumination

New Testament Luke 8:26-39 NT page 68

Sermon “Jesus & the Bro Code” John R. Hilley

Time of Reflection

Prayers of the People–Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

We Respond to God’s Love

*Hymn For Freedom, Christ has Set us Free!

"For freedom, Christ has set us free!"
What joy is ours to claim!
No more enslaved, humanity
Finds life in Jesus' name.
We try, Lord, to be justified
Through all the works we do.
Yet you adopt us, saying, "Child,
It's Christ who makes you new."

We're clothed in Christ and we belong;
Now no one waits outside.
In him we find our common song;
Old ways no more divide.
"It is no longer I who live,
But Christ who lives in me."
He died for us, new life to give —
And new identity.

Now, Spirit-filled, may we be led
From ways that would destroy.
May we your people turn instead
To lives of love and joy.
May we find peace that makes us whole
And patience everywhere.
God, give us kindness, self-control,
And hearts and hands that share.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Our Mission

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

EBPC is partnering with First Presbyterian Church of Franklin for Vacation Bible School this summer. It will run Monday, June 20th until Thursday, June 23rd from 9:00 a.m. to noon. There is a $10 non-refundable registration fee per child. It is for children ages 4 (by 8/15/2016) to 6th grade.
