An Invitation to Wonder

Sunday, June 18, 2017

The congregation is asked to use the time of the pre-service

music as a period of silent prayer and preparation.

   Thought before Worship

“Lord, catch us off guard today. Surprise us with some moment of beauty or pain so that for at least a moment we may be startled into seeing you are here in all your splendor, always and everywhere, barely hidden, beneath, beyond, within this life we live.” -Frederick Buechner, The Hungering Dark

*Call to Worship

By gathering together in worship, we declare:

We have some measure of faith,

and we would like to have more.

What happens here in this space,

matters out there in the world.

Our lives are not in vain,

and today is not yesterday lived over again.

God’s love is real,

and is always moving us toward grace.

With confidence and joy, with courage and hope,

let us worship God!

*Opening Prayer

*Hymn #664 “Morning Has Broken”

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Merciful God,

Forgive us when we look at our friends and family,

our neighbors,

and even the strangers on the street,

but fail to see you in their faces.

Forgive us when we hear the cries of the newly grief-stricken,

hungry children,

and homeless refugees,

but fail to hear you in their voices.

Forgive us when we feast on bread fresh out of the oven,

ice cream as refreshing as a brand new day,

and vegetables that strengthen our bodies,

but fail to taste your grace in every bite.

Forgive us when you are all around us, O God, and we do not even notice.

Time for silent reflection

Response “In the Lord I’ll Be Ever Thankful”

In the Lord I’ll be ever thankful; in the Lord I will rejoice!

Look to God; do not be afraid.

Lift up your voices; the Lord is near.

Lift up your voices; the Lord is near.

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

As God through Jesus has recognized and forgiven each of us, let us now ourselves recognize and forgive each other by sharing God’s peace with one another. The peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Caught by Surprise”

Time of Reflection

We Respond to God’s Love

Prayers of the People (with the Lord’s Prayer)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Litany of Recognition & Honor for Father’s Day

On this day we recognize our fathers and stepfathers,

those who have nurtured and guided us in our lives.
We thank You, O God,

for those who have been fathers to us.

We honor our grandfathers, our uncles and brothers,

those who have demonstrated love and care to us in our lives.
We thank You, O God,

for those who have been like fathers to us.

We appreciate our teachers, leaders and pastors,

who have been both male and female,

but we especially honor those who have extended

fatherly tenderness and love in our lives in our past and present.
We thank You, O God,

for those who have fulfilled a fatherly role in our lives.

Loving God, You have been both Mother and Father to us.

Abba, Father, we remember how Jesus called out to You on earth,

recognizing that You are closer to us than our earthly parents.

Your love and care for us are felt

in the ways we are loved and cared for by others.

We thank You for all the male figures in our lives

who have shared Your love with us.

We ask that You guide and nurture new fathers and fathers-to-be.

We seek Your forgiveness for fathers who have fallen short,

for models of fatherhood that were limiting rather than embracing,

for that is not Your model.

You are our ever-loving Parent, Father of us all.

Grant Your wisdom to all fathers and fatherly figures

to love their children as You have loved Your children.
We thank You, O God,

for fatherhood and motherhood,

for the blessing of parents in our lives.

Abba, Father,

we pray with those who are mourning the loss of fathers today,

and for those whose fathers were absent or abusive

Ease their pain on this day, loving God.

May they know Your embrace,

and that You are more than Father or Mother to us–

You are the all-loving, all-caring Parent,

Creator of heaven and earth,

who knows the hairs on our heads.
We thank You, O God,

that You are always with us,

that You will never leave us or forsake us.

We thank You for this day,

and ask that You bless all of Your children with Your love,

as a wonderful father loves their child.

*Doxology #606

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

praise God, all creatures here below;

praise God above, ye heavenly host;

praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*Prayer of Thanksgiving & Dedication

We Go from Here to Serve

*Hymn #693 “Though I May Speak”

*Parting Words

Through tears and laughter, grief and joy, enlarge our trust and care;

so bind us in community that we may risk and dare.

Be with us when we gather here to worship, sing, and pray;

then send us forth in power and faith to live the words we say.

*Please stand if you are able.

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the calendar of events for dates and times.

Evolving from a rich musical history, EBPC strives for diversity of music in worship. On any given Sunday, worshippers may experience our choir sharing traditional or new hymns, handbells ringing, our praise band ensemble performing contemporary Christian songs, or guest vocalists or musicians sharing southern spirituals, Celtic, bluegrass, classical, shape note, jazz, Americana, soul, or other musical genres.

Are you looking for a convenient way to support EBPC's mission and programs? Do you want a secure and organized way to make donations to the church? Are you like most people who do not carry a checkbook around anymore? EBPC offers many choices when it comes to donations. With the advent of online giving, making donations is an easy and convenient choice. Online giving gives you the ability to donate to EBPC without writing a check or remembering to give each month. EBPC offers two online giving options. One option gives you the ability to donate by bank draft directly from your bank and the second option allows you to donate online through our EBPC website, through a mobile app, or even with a quick text message from your phone.

Plans are shaping up for our 3rd Annual Music in the Grove concert on September 4th! We have three bands booked so far: Next Door Boys - which includes two alums from our very own preschool - and Mr. Steve, the Music Man and our very own Nate Strasser & Friends band. We are still confirming our headliner for the concert so stay tuned for an upcoming announcement. In addition to our musical offerings, we will have a bounce house, face painting, Sky Studios musical petting zoo, food trucks and more!

Congregational Care: We want to assist with needs that may arise, either anticipated or unexpected, among the people in our church family. Please feel free to contact Richard Strecker at (615) 472-1502 or streckr1@aol.com.
