“Peace is joy at rest.

Joy is peace on its feat.”

We Gather to Worship God

Welcome & Announcements

A Call to Worship

When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion,

we were like those who dream.

Then our mouth was filled with laughter,

and our tongue with shouts of joy.

When the Lord raised Jesus from the dead,

we were like those who dream.

Now our mouths are filled with laughter,

and our tongues with shouts of joy.

The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoice.

May all those who have sowed in tears

reap with shouts of hip hip hooray! (repeat 2x)

Time with Children Lindsey Hinds-Brown

Lighting of the Advent Candle The Zadell Family

I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my whole being shall praise my God. ..
For as the earth brings forth, it shoots, as a garden springs up with what has been sown in it,
So the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to sprout and grow before all the nations. Three candles shine as God’s promise draws near, beckoning us to be a living witness of good news and great joy.

Christ is coming to make all things new! With expansive imagination, we prepare him room, and we are opening to Christ, the light of the world.

*Hymn #133 “O Come, All Ye Faithful” Vs. 1

Call to Confession

Prayer of Confession

Incarnate God,

We sing of a silent night,

but we long to hear your voice.

We sing of joy to the world,

but we are all too familiar with sorrow.

We sing O come all ye faithful,

but our own faith is often lacking.

Draw near to us, O child of Bethlehem.

Be the answer to our unspoken questions,

the courage that scatters our secret fears,

and the love that humbles our hardened hearts.

Time for Silent Reflection

Response “Angels We Have Heard on High”

Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo! (2x)

Assurance of Forgiveness

Friends, believe the good news.

In Jesus Christ we are forgiven.

Passing of the Peace

The peace of Christ is with you!

And also with you.

*Gloria Patri #581

Reflection “The Places Hope Takes You” John R. Hilley

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.

Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.”

The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.- Psalm 126

Prayers of the People—Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as

we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

We Respond to God’s Love

This Week in Children's Worship and Upwards: the children perform “Jingle Bell Beach”!

Welcome to East Brentwood

To Our Members: East Brentwood gladly welcomes first-time and returning visitors. By introducing yourself and sharing a warm greeting, you express the hospitality of our congregation. Please share a smile and welcoming word to those around you.

To Our Guests: We offer education and fellowship opportunities in the mornings and evenings for children, youth and adults. Please see the calendar of events for dates and times. Be sure to complete a yellow contact card if you wish to receive future communications from EBPC.

East Brentwood Presbyterian Church is a community church made up of a loving, welcoming family of believers in honest conversation with God. We seek to emulate the ministry of Jesus through compassionate service, with stimulating and relevant exploration of God’s Word, and by sharing that Word and God’s many blessings with our neighbors in Middle Tennessee and around the world.

Join us this afternoon at 4:00 pm for a jazz-inspired Christmas concert led by our fabulous EBPC Music Director Nate Strasser with festive refreshments afterwards. Selections will include traditional Christmas hymns, new favorites and the always, popular requests and sing-along songs. This concert was a huge hit last year, please join us again!

January-March 2018 FEAST Group Sign-Ups (Friends Eating and Sharing Together) We are going to start assembling small groups of people (6-10 per group) who would like to meet for a meal and conversation during the first quarter of the New Year. Each group would decide when and how often they would like to get together as well as the meal format (pot-luck or restaurant, lunch after church or dinner, entire familes or adult-only, etc.). Please fill out your name and contact info on the Connection Corner Sign-up sheet or email Liz Beatty at aybeatty@comcast.net. You will receive more information in late December about who is in your group. Bon Appetit!!!!

We have compiled an EBPC directory with photos and contact information so that we can better connect as a congregation. Here's what you need to know:

· It is available via our website at: http://www.eastbrentwoodpc.com/member-directory/

· The password is ebpc9000

· Please review the info and let Doug Hausken in the church office (ebpcoffice@comcast.net) know if there is inaccurate information and update him should the information change in the future.

· Also, if you would like a different photo, please send him a digital photo (in jpeg or jpg form) to use instead.

· For clarification, the contact information in the directory should not be shared outside the EBPC family nor should it be used for commercial purposes.

Connection Corner and Collection Center: As you might have noticed, the Sanctuary, Narthex, Office Hallway and Gathering Place are undergoing a transformation. Each time you are in the building, please be sure to check out the Connection Corner board and Mission and Service Collection Center in the Gathering Place for opportunities to volunteer, get involved and give back. You can also use the Sign-Up Genius associated with the various events and projects such as the Hospitality and Worship Support Openings: https://goo.gl/1PzcaY.

Time and Talent Sheets: As important as financially pledging to the church is, committing to helping implement the ministry projects is equally a vital way to be an involved EBPC family member. Not only will you being sharing the workload, you will also be finding worthwhile ways to connect with other individuals at EBPC. Please return your household’s Time and Talent Sheet to the wooden box in the Narthex during the next few weeks as we prepare for 2018. If you have questions about individual ministry areas, please contact Liz Beatty at aybeatty@comcast.net.

Name Tags: We have been blessed to see so many new faces around church this fall. So that we might better connect, please be sure to wear your name tag (located in name tag cabinet adjacent to the Gathering Place). If you don’t have one and need a replacement, please contact Doug Hausken at ebpcoffice@comcast.net.

Advent Devotionals: One way to stay centered during these hectic holiday times is to commit to reading a daily devotional and engaging in quiet prayer and reflection time. Be sure to pick up a free devotional located in the Narthex so that you are ready to begin your reading on Dec. 3.

English tutor needed for Glenview Elementary Parents! Two parents at Glenview (our partner school) are eager to learn English. They have lived in America for 6 months and need our help. Glenview’s English teacher from TFLI (TN Foreign Language Institute) has agreed to train a tutor, and we can set up a time to meet weekly at Glenview. Please call or email Elizabeth Johnson if interested. Thank you! 919-724-0976 or EBPC.preschool.chapel@gmail.com.

Two yoga classes recently started in the EBPC sanctuary on Sunday afternoons at 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm. There is a $50 monthly fee. If you are interested, let John know at ebpcpastor@comcast.net.

Stewardship Update: We thank you for the positive response we have had from many church members who continue to give in 2017 towards reducing our financial deficit. We are especially grateful to the many households who have responded to  our 2018 Stewardship campaign. We are so close to meeting our goal of $212,000. Total pledged (46 pledges)  so far is $206, 960. We have had 13 new pledges and 19 households have increased their pledges. If we haven’t heard from you, could you help us reach our goal?
